Psychiatric Consultation & Medication Management

IN THIS SECTION

Psychiatric consultation supports participants in understanding symptoms and treatment.

What Is Psychiatric Consultation and Medication Management?

At PIER, psychiatric care is grounded in thorough assessement and early intervention. This means looking beyond symptoms alone and considering the participant’s environment, relationships, stressors, and goals. Medication may play a role, but it is never the only focus.

Hear how PIER approaches psychiatric care through early intervention and whole-person support.

How This Support Works

Psychiatric consultation typically begins with an initial assessment as part of the intake process. During this time, the psychiatrist and nurse work with the participant to understand what they are experiencing, what concerns they have, and what supports are already in place.

Participants then meet regularly with their psychiatrist and nurse to check in, discuss how medications are working, and make adjustments as needed to address symptoms and minimize side effects.

What to Expect

Participants can expect a thoughtful, collaborative process that may include:

  • Time to talk through symptoms, questions, and concerns
  • Clear explanations about medication options and possible effects
  • Shared decision-making about whether and how medication is used
  • Ongoing follow-up to monitor effectiveness and side effects
  • Adjustments over time based on what feels helpful

Psychiatric consultation works alongside other PIER supports, including individual counseling, care management, peer support, and family services.

A Whole-Person Approach

PIER’s approach recognizes that mental health is shaped by many factors. Supporting someone early—across different areas of life—can help reduce the risk of challenges becoming more disruptive over time.

Medication may be one helpful tool, but care always considers the full context of a participant’s life, not just symptoms.
