Individual Counseling
A collaborative therapy that helps participants make sense of their experiences and reduce distress.
What is Individual Counseling?
Individual counseling offers participants a space to talk through what they are experiencing with a trained clinician. Counseling is collaborative and flexible. Participants help set the goals and pace, and support is tailored to what feels most important at the time.

Our Approach: CBTp and Other Individualized Therapies
Individual counseling at PIER is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp), an evidence-based approach designed specifically for people experiencing early psychosis. CBTp helps participants explore how thoughts, perceptions, emotions, and experiences are connected. It supports participants in developing their own understanding and strategies for managing distress.
Our whole-person approach includes additional evidence-based practices tailored to each individual’s needs.
What Counseling Can Help With
Individual counseling may help participants:
- Make sense of unusual or distressing experiences
- Reduce stress related to thoughts or perceptions
- Build coping strategies for everyday situations
- Strengthen confidence and self-understanding
- Work toward personal, school, or work-related goals
Counseling focuses on improving quality of life, not on labeling or defining someone by a diagnosis.
What to Expect
Sessions are typically held one-on-one with a clinician and follow a structured but flexible format. Counseling does not require participants to be at a specific stage of recovery and can change over time as needs and goals evolve.
Your PIER clinician can help determine whether individual counseling may be helpful and how it fits into your overall care.
Counseling focuses on improving quality of life, not on labeling or defining someone by a diagnosis.
